Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderate trekking trail that takes you through the unique and separated parts of Manang and Mustang district, and reaches at the high elevation of 5,106m at Larkya La Pass. This circuit trail takes you around one of the world's tallest mountains, and it feels like stepping into a quieter, older side of Nepal. The journey starts in Gorkha District, in Gandaki Province, where the road ends and the walking begins at Machha Khola.

Getting to the trail is an adventure by itself. The rough jeep ride from Kathmandu shakes your whole body, but all the tiredness goes away as soon as you step on the dirt path at Machha Khola. From here, the trail follows the Budi Gandaki River Valley, a deep gorge with fast blue water and swinging suspension bridges. You pass through Jagat, a small checkpoint village, then continue up to Namrung, where the houses start looking more Tibetan and the air feels thinner. As you continue walking along the river you cross high suspension bridges that sway gently in the wind. In the evenings, sitting inside cozy wooden teahouses eating hot Dal Bhat (rice and lentils) in a warm heater feels like the best meal in the world after a long walk. This whole area sits inside the Manaslu Restricted Area, so you'll need special permits and a licensed guide, since trekking alone here isn't allowed.

As you climb higher, you reach Lho Village, home to the beautiful Ribum Monastery, also called Lho Monastery, where Prayer Flags flap in the wind above old Mani Walls. A short walk further brings you to Samagaon Village, one of the best places to rest and get your first real look at Mount Manaslu (8,163 m) towering above the valley. You just stand quietly and stare at the giant mountain that looks so close you feel you can touch it. You hear monks chanting in old temples and you always spin the prayer wheels clockwise to show respect to local culture. Nearby, Birendra Lake sits quietly below the Manaslu Glacier, a perfect spot to slow down for a day.

From Samagaon, many trekkers walk up toward the Manaslu Base Camp viewpoint, catching close-up views of the mountain and the Pungyen Glacier. Continuing on, the trail passes Samdo Village, the last settlement before the high country, then reaches Dharamsala, also known as Larkya Phedi, the final stop before the big crossing.

Early the next morning, you wake up at 3:00 AM when it is pitch dark and very cold. Walking up the high pass is hard because the air is thin and your legs feel heavy. But when you reach the top at Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), bright colorful flags fly in the wind. Looking at the endless white mountains all around you makes all the hard work worth it. This pass is the highest and hardest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. It's cold, steep, and slow, but the view from the top, with the Larkya Glacier spread out below, makes it worth every step. After crossing, you descend into Bimthang, a peaceful village with wide mountain views on the other side.

Throughout the trek, daily life is shaped by Nubri Culture and Tibetan Buddhist Culture, with old Buddhist Monasteries like Pungyen Gompa scattered along the way. This kind of teahouse trekking through the Manaslu Conservation Area offers some of the most rewarding Himalayan trekking left in Nepal today.

Why Choose the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is widely considered one of Nepal's finest off-the-beaten-path adventures. It is an ideal choice for trekkers looking for an authentic Himalayan journey without the heavy crowds.

Peaceful Trek Away from the Crowds

Unlike other busy trekking routes, the Manaslu Circuit operates under restricted permit regulations that limit the daily visitor number which keeps the trail quiet, serene, and untouched by mass tourism. Walking through these valleys, you get to experience the peaceful rhythms of Himalayan life.

Rich Cultural Experience

The Manaslu region is a cool place to visit because it is like stepping back in time. When you walk around villages like Sama Gaun and Samdo you will see houses made of stone and old monasteries which are also called gompa. There are thousands of stones with special words called mantras carved into them. The Manaslu region feels like you are really experiencing the old spiritual culture.

Beautiful and Ever-Changing Scenery

All along the way, giant snow-capped mountains like Mount Manaslu stand right in front of you, giving you a totally new and amazing view every single day.

Responsible and Sustainable Trekking

Trekking responsibly in Manaslu helps keep the mountain clean and supports local villagers. By using refilled water bottles, staying in local teahouses, respecting sacred sites to protect fragile nature, and ensuring your trip directly benefits the remote mountain communities you visit.

Best Time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

The best time for the Manaslu Circuit trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is stable with pleasant temperature and comes with clear visibility whereas monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain and slippery trails, obscuring mountain views because of clouds. Winter ( December to February) has freezing temperatures with heavy snow and poor visibility.

Spring (March – May)

Spring offers mild temperatures with longer daylight hours toward May, with great visibility of mountain peaks, though occasional fog can develop in the late afternoon at lower altitude. The trailside forest comes alive with colourful blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers. Larkya La Pass gradually melts, making for good trail conditions.

Autumn (September – November)

Autumn brings clear skies and warm day time temperature with crystal-clear visibility of Mount Manaslu and other surrounding peaks, with fresh mountain air and lively atmosphere on the trail. This is the absolute most popular month to cross Larkya La Pass safely.

Winter (December – February)

Winter has freezing temperatures with heavy snow-covered trails, which has a high risk of Larkya La Pass closing due to snowdrifts. Along the trail, teahouses may remain closed at higher elevations due to weather conditions.

Monsoon (June – August)

Monsoon normally has heavy rainfall with slippery, muddy trek trails and landslides; you can even see leeches on your way. Visibility is not clear because of the weather conditions.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Altitude Profile

The trek starts at Machha Khola (870m) and slightly gains elevation through Jagat (1,340m), Deng (1,860m), and Namrung (2,630m). You continue ascending to Lho (3,180m) and Sama Gaun (3,520m), followed by Samdo (3,860m). The final climb leads to High Camp Dharmasala (4,460m) before reaching the maximum height at Larkya La Pass (5,160m), followed by a steep descent to Bhimthang (3,720m).

Manaslu Circuit Trek Distance

The Manaslu Circuit Trek covers around 177 kilometers, usually completed in around 10 to 15 days of walking. Normally, trekkers walk for 5 to 7 hours each day, covering around 8 to 15 kilometers. The lower sections from Machha Khola to Namrung involve longer days of 15 to 22 kilometers, taking 6 to 8 hours of walking. As you reach higher elevation around Samdo, daily distances shorten to 8 to 12 kilometers over 5 to 7 hours a day to help with acclimatization. The most challenging phase is crossing Larkya La Pass, which is 18 to 24 kilometers and requires 8 to 10 hours of walking from Dharmasala down to Bhimthang.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

Trekkers must be mentally and physically ready for the Manaslu Circuit trek for long walking hours every day, it's not easy because it is a high-altitude adventure that's moderate to challenging. The hardest part of the Manaslu Circuit trek is crossing Larkey La Pass. To get across this point, you have to get up very early and walk on steep and icy slopes. The main thing to worry about is altitude sickness, because the trail spends multiple days in thin air above 3,500m; altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness - AMS) is a primary concern.

Is Manaslu Circuit Trek Suitable for Beginners?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is generally not suitable for complete beginners, as it is a challenging, high-altitude journey that requires strong physical and mental preparation. Trekkers face long daily walks of 5 to 8 hours over steep, uneven terrain for nearly two weeks, leading up to the crossing of Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters, where thin air and altitude sickness present real risks. For these reasons, multi-day hiking experience ideally at higher elevations is strongly recommended so you know how your body handles continuous walking and thinner air.

Preparation and Safety Measures for Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal

Preparing for the Manaslu Circuit requires cardiovascular training and leg conditioning. Ensure safety by acclimatizing gradually to prevent altitude sickness, hiring a licensed guide, carrying warm gear, and securing travel insurance that covers high-altitude helicopter evacuation up to 6,000m.

Physical Fitness

You can focus on exercise like running, cycling, and stair climbing. For leg strength, you can practice doing squats or step-ups before your trek because this helps you handle continuous uphill walking and rocky Himalayan terrain. Being physically fit can help your journey become hassle-free and more comfortable.

Acclimatization

Walk at a slow and steady pace throughout the trek. Take planned acclimatization days at Samagaun or Samdo to give your body time to adjust to higher altitude. This greatly reduces the risk of altitude sickness before crossing the challenging Larkya La Pass.

Diet and Hydration

Eat meals that are high in carbohydrates and freshly cooked locally, such as Dal Bhat and garlic soup, to keep your energy levels up. Drink 3 to 4 liters of water every day with electrolytes. This will help keep your blood oxygenated and prevent altitude sickness.

First Aid Kit and Medicine

Bring medicine for altitude, like Diamox, which is also called Acetazolamide. Also include rehydration salts, painkillers, blister plasters, antibiotics that work on types of bacteria, water purification tablets, and basic bandages for wounds.

Things to Know before Joining the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Before joining the Manaslu Circuit Trek, remember that the trail is tough, reaching Larkya La Pass is challenging, the tea houses are very basic, have little cash because in the trek trails you won't be able to find ATMs or an online payment system, and carrying water purification tablets can be very helpful.

Visa

You can get your visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), or you can even apply through an online pre-application portal. Visa fees are normally 30 USD for 15 days, 50 USD for 30 days, and 125 USD for 90 days. Ensure your password has at least 6 months of validity left.

Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for the Manaslu Circuit trek. Standard travel policies do not cover high-altitude mountain hazards, so make sure your policy covers high-altitude trekking up to 6000 meters and emergency evacuation rescue.

Permit

Because Manaslu is a restricted border region near Tibet, three mandatory permits are required: Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). These permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency in Nepal.

Transportation

From Kathmandu to Machha Khola, you will have an 8 to 10-hour drive by public bus; the cost may be around 1500 to 2000 NPR per person, or share/private jeep at around 25,000 NPR. After the trek, travel from Dharapani to Besisahar by shared or private jeep, then continue to Kathmandu by tourist bus or jeep.

Duration

The Manaslu Circuit Trek usually takes 15 days, depending on the itinerary and acclimatization schedule. Most trekkers spend extra days at Samagaun or Samdo to adjust to the altitude before crossing the challenging Larkya La Pass at 5,160 metres.

Guide and Porter

Hiring a licensed guide is mandatory for the Manaslu Circuit Trek because it is a restricted area. A porter is optional but highly recommended to carry your luggage, making the trek easier and allowing you to enjoy the journey with less physical strain. A porter will carry up to 30 kg, often shared between two trekkers.

Weather Condition

Autumn (September - November ) offers clear skies and stable temperatures, whereas spring ( March - May ) brings blooming rhododendron trails with moderate temperatures. Winter ( December - February ) has freezing temperatures with poor visibility, snow blocking Larkey La Pass, and monsoon ( June - August ) brings heavy rains, slippery trail with landslides.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided in local teahouses along the trail. Rooms are simple with twin beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. Facilities become more basic as you reach higher elevations, and hot showers, charging, and Wi-Fi are usually available for an additional cost.

Food And Drinks

Food and drinks are very basic and will give you energy through your trek days. Food that contains high energy like dal bhat, rice, soup, pasta, potatoes, eggs and pancakes, is normally found at teahouses, try drinking boiled water at teahouses or carry purification tablets with you for safety, or use a reusable filter bottle when you are at teahouses; it is very convenient.

Clothing Essential

Pack warm layer clothes for changing mountain weather. It is essential to carry comfortable clothes during the trek for your comfort; carry waterproof hiking boots, warm thermal socks, crampons for icy pass section, and a trekking pole for your support on trekking trails.

Personal expenses

Carry enough Nepalese cash during the trek as ATMs and online card system services are not available, for drinks, snacks, hot showers, charging, Wi-Fi, laundry, tips, and souvenirs. Personal expenses may vary depending upon your spending habits.
